Backing Materials

We provide four different backing options for different applications that the rug is going into. All our backings are applied permanently to the carpet or rug and they will protect the flooring material that the rug is going to lay on. We recommend using a backing anytime the rug is going over a surface like wood or vinyl to protect the finish. We also recommend using a backing anytime you seam borders or custom insets into the rug to give the seam area extra strength and durability.

#1 Non-Skid backing is our most commonly used backing. It runs to the edge of the rug and the edging material is bound over it to create a durable and finished look. This non-skid material will keep all your rugs in place when placed over any and all types of surfaces. It will keep the harsh and abrasive backing of carpet and rugs from damaging your flooring.

#2 Non-Skid Cushion backing adds cushion to the rug while still keeping it in place and free of damaging the flooring it is laid on. The cushion is approximately 1/4" thick and it is cut short of the edge of the rug to allow the carpet to flow down over the padding and become flat to the floor. This allows you to have cushion without a trip hazard. The cushion gives a great under foot feel and makes the rug feel very thick and plush. The padding is permanently attached to the carpet so that the rug can rolled up and cleaned under or moved with out needing to re adjust the padding and rug each time it is re-laid.

#3 Felt backing is our most economical backing. It gives the same finished look as the #1 backing and it will also get bound over by the edging material. It does not give you a non-skid quality but it will protect all the surfaces it goes over. This is a great option for large rugs that will get furniture placed on it as the furniture will keep the rug from moving. It will protect the seams and custom insets and give the rug and your flooring a much longer life. We would not recommend this for small or runner style rugs that will be on a slippery surface. It can however work well when the rug is placed over carpeting.

#4 Cushion over Carpet backing adds cushion to the rug while still keeping it in place and free of damaging the carpet it is laid on.
